Bread of Life

Now that you know what to eat to stay healthy during your life on earth, I must also tell you what to eat to have eternal life!

Listen to what Jesus said to some people who asked him: "Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. …On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval... Then Jesus declared: I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. For my father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day! I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned, he has crossed over from death to life". Check it in the Bible, John Chapter 6.

That is a strong statement. As it comes from Jesus, we would not assume that it is a lie? So if it is true, what does it mean to believe in Jesus?

Believe what Jesus says in the Bible about himself, that he is God the Son, but he decided, in agreement with his Father, to become a human being and live his life totally in accordance with God's will. During his life on earth, Jesus never broke any of God's 10 commandments: He loved God with all his heart, never swore or cursed God, honoured his parents, never lied, stole or killed, never envied his neighbour's wife, achievements or houses, he did not commit adultery.

On the other hand, all human beings are breaking God's laws all the time, and because God is Holy, totally perfect and just, he cannot connect with us and he must punish us for not obeying him. But because God loves us so much, he asked Jesus to take the punishment for us and he did it! As a totally innocent person out of his free will, he died a painful cruel death. Why? To be punished instead of us and to make it possible for us to be reconciled to God.

If we decide not to believe that, we are responsible before God for every wrong motive, thought, word and action we commit. But if we believe in Jesus and not in our own goodness, and accept what he has done for us, God declares us not guilty and forgives us everything we ever did wrong.

The Bible also says when we believe in Jesus, we become God's children, Jesus becomes our brother and we receive God's spirit, the Holy Spirit into our hearts so that we understand that God made us and loves us. One day (soon?) Jesus will come back and rule on earth together with everyone who believes in him. He will make a new heaven and a new earth and there will be no more pain, sickness, crying or death on it. Amazing! I want to be there and Jesus wants you there as well. That's why he asked his friends - those who believe in him - to tell others the Good News or Gospel of Jesus, so you can choose the bread of life for yourself by turning from your own ways and surrendering your life completely to God.
